Game Construction




I created Actionscript classes for each function in the game, such as Spawning control, Perks for the player to use, enemy speed, player health etc. A lot of this code tied in with graphics such as health, energy & perk bars, death explosions (along with sound) and bullet firing. After a lot of coding, I got ever closer to finishing this project. With my new-found Actionscript knowledge, I could change any of the game's properties that I had made to suit my desire. 


And this is the finished game! I quite happy with how it turned out for the time we had on this project. I look forward to trying more of this out!

Initial Ideas

I've decided that, since I'm making an entire game and we only have a certain amount of time, I will not be going for a really ambitious idea. Instead, I will be creating something that is tried and tested - a simple turret shooter game. I've had many ideas about scenarios and settings for the game and I've settled on a style which is reminiscent of the Mexican holiday - 'Dia de los Muertos' or 'The Day of the Dead'. I've always found this to be a very intriguing style and I feel this could be a great opportunity to work with it.


I've worked on some initial ideas and I'm settling with the idea of the player controlling the last cactus in a desert. Since cacti are a source of water in the desert, this lone plant would be the only source of water left. It would then have to use its spiked projectiles to fend off all the feisty inhabitants of the hot desert to protect its water supply. After a lot of concepts I knocked the list down to 8 potential character designs for the cactus:


I'd already started programming the game at this point, since the player would only be viewed from the very top of the head no matter what character I chose. They would later be used in the game's HUD and instructions screens. 

Introduction

For this brief, we are focusing on specialism. This means we are choosing a field we feel most comfortable in and that we would like to expand our knowledge on. I have chosen the field of Flash game development, including game assets and animation.
